The Garden Waits

And thrives; a few days away

That’s all, but a morning frolic

Saw me tap-dancing among

The plants before work.

Ten minutes in the garden:

The salvias shimmied, roses

Waltzed, cyclamen bobbed

Dizzy with colour; viburnum,

Leafy clematis, the ivy thrives…

Such abundance.

Only my unknown visitor throws soil

About with abandon

In search of some unknown…such

An unseasonal Indian

Summer, we long to get out

Into the vernacular

Do we thank

Climate change for the waves

Of warmth that settle roots

Stir pens, dip quills

Loosen limbs?

The birds too groom

Whistle, sing and play,

Unencumbered by the

Worker’s day

Or earth’s long shadow

Lurking in a some time future
