Ballad of Thyme

are you going to garden today?

parsely sage rosemary and thyme

we thought we’d planted fields in may

but it’s stones we sometimes find

parsley, sage, rosemary

and thyme and I’m singing the song as I plant

for all of us who thought we were sowing

peace-seeds as we sang along.

but scarborough fair was long ago

another thyme when herbs grew wild

on the hillsides of canticle

and fair day was tranquil and fun

amongst medieval plague and jousts.

there’ll be a time when thyme might burst

purple and pink on my neighbourhood verge

but there’s more to planting than this.

are you going to garden today?

parsely sage rosemary and thyme

we thought we’d planted fields in may

but it’s stones we sometimes find
