a balloon finds a rose

losing its way, someone’s silver

balloon wrapped itself loosely

around my sparrieshoop

trailing a small tale of hope

around an exceedingly prickly

stem of sharp, unforgiving thorns.

in the clearing of day, a delicate

sunray danced a narrow path

through broken rain branches

while a broody currawong sat

still with me and watched

for such an ephemeral balloon

to pop, which it did not
