Rain Music

The night sets out a serenade

of soothing patter, of soaking sounds

which sink below the autumn

ground.

Lapsings, pauses, then chord of twig and bud

and then a third as soggy leaves, caught

in the wash and swish of drizzle,

cogitate.

I have drifted into rain’s rhythm of reflecting

modality, a steadiness that feeds thought

with comforting assonance, an ode to autumn’s

retreat.
