Walking beyond the Yarra

I set off for trees beyond buildings

as a city encircled by green

constructs its image in concrete

and mirrors, the centre

remaining unseen.

Old parks revive in shade

cast in leaves, not bronze.

I turn from the curve

of  river and head to fern gully

curled frons drawing me

further away.

Soon I am following

the sound of a bell bird

an insistent, persistent drill

which knocks at the gate

to be let out, though

the sky is clear,

bulldozers a faint scuffle

and a few footsteps

down river
