in which insects take shelter

night life disappears as heat keeps

the soil and slate beating past dusk

with a desert heart. even the breeze

sinks below heavy air wafting

in broken waves of warmth sending

insects elsewhere. lizards scurry

indoors where a restlessness

listens to the quiet of dark
