Summer holds on

There holds a futile gesture of breeze

a reminder of ends though summer

refuses each offering of breath,

staying put.

 

Plant sufferings droop leaves

as humid heat gathers fingers of fungus

into bundles of food for an autumn

denied entrance

 

Every day waits to go on
