only a currawong

seems at peace in the spring heat.

for this mammal bird floats above me

as light as a hundred feathers

of flight as I chase droplets of water

into hardened earth, plants giving up.

Landing serenely on the bird bath

edge, with humble nimbleness

for one so watchful of my work

I observe this soulful crooner

transmute slowly into swan
