Verging

Verge plants perish in the endless sun

their leaves sapped of strength as I water

coax, weed, mulch, fertilize, pace and pour

care on their flopping flowers. To replace

and replenish, my currawong friend

crows, splashing in the birdbath

under the shade of a sycamore

as heat droops us all.
