Daylight

comes later now. time

has changed

the seasons’ expectations

and drought runs dust and dry

in rivers tanned of scrub;

the sheep will not be shorn

all water has been sold

birds wake before us

cattle starve.

So when daylight

draws a latent

breath and insects wake

to meet the dark,

to drink the air

we pause
